As elderly people continue to age, it’s almost inevitable that they’ll suffer from mobility issues at some point. Depending on their circumstances, it could a life-changing thing. You need to know how to care for them effectively when they’re struggling to move around like they used to. Whether it’s just a case of lending a helping hand or buying them tools to make their lives easier, you can be a huge assistance to them.

Before mobility issues set in, you might want to start looking out for any potential signs. Their ability to drive or walk around the local shops might be compromised, and it’s best to spot this as early as possible. Also, mobility issues can occasionally signify serious health problems, so you’ll want to be on the lookout. Small ways of noticing this might be in their lack of exercise, or even failing to clean the house as often as they used to. The more obvious indicators are things like reduced balance and struggling to walk up and down the stairs. If they’re straining to do anything, pick up on it and question them about it in a polite way.

When it’s clear that mobility issues have set in, and they’re going to need help, there’s a few things you can do. First, convince them that getting a Blue Badge for their car is a necessity. If they can still drive but struggle to walk, this is of paramount importance. They can’t afford to park a long way away and walk long distances anymore. They’re obviously going to need walking sticks as well if they’re forced to do any walking outside. Make sure they’ve got something that is comfortable and comes up to the right height.

If they’re planning to spend a lot of time outside but they simply can’t walk anymore, consider buying them a mobility scooter. This way, they’ll be able to travel anywhere they want without putting excess stress on their joints. Keep it regularly maintained for them and ensure that they understand how to use it properly. You can buy mobility scooter batteries to improve mobility and mileage as well, so do your research beforehand about these things. There’s no point buying them a scooter if they can’t get the most out of it.

If you’re noticing issues crop up as time goes on, it’s definitely worth visiting the doctor with them. While you can try and convince them to go on their own, having a second opinion will certainly benefit. Sometimes, the elderly feel quite embarrassed as they get older and struggle to move in the way they once did. Be respectful of this, and don’t treat them like a child. If they value their independence, let them do as much as they can. All you need to do is be there when they need help.

A lack of mobility is a debilitating thing, but luckily there are lots of ways to combat it. By being better informed, you’ll be able to make an elderly person’s life much easier.
